James Stephen Hynes, 48, of Marietta passed away suddenly on April 13, 2018.
James is survived by his loving parents, David and Kathleen “Kay” (Lombardy)
Hynes of Marietta. James was the fourth of six children. He leaves behind his
brothers, David M. Hynes, Jr., of Los Angeles, CA and Sean (Liz) Hynes of Roswell,
GA. He is also survived by his three sisters, Kathleen (Robert) Makatura of New
York City, NY; Georgia (Chris) Connell of Pittsburgh, PA and Caroline Hynes Rault
of Marietta, GA. James also had fifteen nieces and nephews, whom he adored.
He is also survived by many, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
James lived in the Buckhead neighborhood of Garden Hills and attended Christ
the King. He graduated from Crestwood High School in Dunwoody, Georgia. He
then received his undergraduate degree (B.A.) in English from the University of
Georgia in 1992, where he was a member of the ATO fraternity. He then earned
his Masters of Arts (M.A.), with a focus on English and Literature, from Georgia
State University in 1999. James was an Assistant Professor of English at Gordon
State College. Previously, he was a Professor at Georgia State University and the
Art Institute of Atlanta. Among his many skills, James was a talented musician,
painter, and writer. He is the author of published short stories and reviews. His
paintings have been displayed at many galleries.
People from all walks of life were drawn to his kind disposition and calm
demeanor. James made friends everywhere he went. He remained close to
lifelong friends from childhood and college. James had a wry sense of humor.
James, his family, and friends hope you remember him with a smile and laugh.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the Cathedral
of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30305. Reception to
follow in Kenny Hall.
