Allan McLeod Obituary

Allan “Al” Lamar McLeod, Jr. died on November 27, 2019, on the 51st anniversary of his wedding to Nan Taylor McLeod, surrounded by his family in Marietta, GA.

Born in Jackson, AL on October 30, 1944, Al graduated from Jackson High School in 1963. He enrolled at The Marion Military Institute, where he earned an Associate’s degree and was honored to be a part of the White Knight precision drill team. Then he continued to the University of Alabama, where he earned his undergraduate degree in General Business. While studying at the University, he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and served as Omicron chapter Archon his senior year. After receiving his B.S., he became a graduate of the Banking School of the South. He enlisted in the Air National Guard & Reserves in 1968, serving his country for six years while continuing his education and earning his graduate degree in banking.

Al began his banking career with Barnett Bank of Florida in 1969 and was President and CEO of North Pensacola, Ft. Walton Beach, Naples, Tampa, and Ft. Myers. He retired from the banking business in 1998 at the age of 53, having been with Barnett Bank his entire career. After retiring he went on to become Governor of the Islamorada Moose Lodge and served as Commodore of the Florida Fun Fishers. A longtime member of the Tavernier Elks and Islamorada Fishing Club, Al was a charter member of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center.

He was an avid outdoorsman who played golf courses from Cypress Point in California to St. Andrews in Scotland. Throughout his life, he hunted with friends and family in Alabama, Montana, and British Columbia. His lifelong love of fishing included catching bass in Alabama lakes and rivers, tagging marlins in the Bahamas, and hooking Roosterfish off the coast of Panama. A champion angler, he won numerous events, including the IFC Dolphin Tournament, and was a 2-time winner of the Islamorada SailFly.

Al was thrilled he passed down his love of fishing to his 2 two children, but one of his greatest rewards was fishing with his three grandchildren and getting to see how they love it as he did.

Truly a man for all people, Al was the definition of a genuine “Southern Gentleman.” Kind to everyone, he never met a stranger and was generous to a fault. His laughter was loud and contagious, and his legendary stories and famous catchphrases will be passed on for generations. Al was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and a dyed-in-the-wool Alabama fan. He was a caring brother, a devoted husband, a loving and nurturing father, and one of the proudest grandparents there ever was.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nan Taylor McLeod, daughter Elizabeth (Dennis) McLeod Horton, son Allan (Amy) Lamar McLeod, III; grandchildren Kate McLeod Latourette, Liam McLeod Horton, and Jace Hiro McLeod; and sisters Janet (Bob) Windsor and Gaynor (Mark) Scogin and their families. He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma “Coo” Skipper McLeod, and father, Dr. Allan Lamar McLeod, Sr., DDS.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, the 18th of January, 2020 at the Ocean View in Islamorada, FL.

There will be a family visitation from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM on Saturday, the 25th of January, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church in Jackson, AL, immediately followed by a graveside service at Pine Crest Cemetery.
