John Daniel Dalton was born in Hartsville, TN on 10 May 1926 and graduated from Trousdale County High School in 1944. In August of 1944, he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army in which he served until December 1945.
In the summer of 1947, he joined the newly minted U.S. Air Force and entered pilot training. He served as a career Air Force pilot in a variety of assignments and at various locations including Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas; Barksdale AFB, Louisiana; Warner Robins AFB in Macon, Georgia; Okinawa; Andrews AFB in Washington, D.C.; Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio; Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Norton AFB in San Bernardino, California; Korat Air Base in Thailand; and Eglin AFB in Ft Walton Beach, Florida. He retired from the Air Force on March 1, 1968 as a Major with 24 years, six months of service and over 5,000 hours of flight time.
Following his Air Force career, he worked for Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, GA for most of the next 23 years until his retirement from full time employment in December 1989.
Mr. Dalton is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred R. Dalton, Sr. and Myra Fairley Dalton of Hartsville, TN; wife, Catherine McCarthy Dalton of Marietta, GA; sister, Jean Dalton Bennett of Jackson, MS; brother, Alfred Robertson Dalton, Jr. of Live Oak, FL; son-in-law, Dr. John Elliott of Marietta, GA; and niece, Jean Dianne Bennett of Jackson, MS. He is survived by his four sons: Robert Dalton (Teresa), Daniel Dalton (Connie), John Dalton (Jackie), Tom Dalton (Jeanne), and two daughters, Anne Dalton Acton (Andy), and Mary Dalton Elliott; two nieces, 13 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8 PM on Wednesday, December 26 at the Medford-Peden Funeral Home in Marietta. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday, December 27. Burial will be at the Georgia National Cemetery following the funeral.
