June M. Hedlund, a 12 year resident of Marietta, passed away Monday evening, the Sixteenth of July, after a very brief illness following the celebration of her One Hundredth Birthday. Born in the shadow of Mount Mitchell, North Carolina at the end of the second decade of the Twentieth Century, June was raised with sisters Grace, Katherine, Nell, and her brother Howard, all of whom she survived.
She graduated from finishing/secretarial school in Durham, NC and applied for an overseas civil service posting. She was thrilled to be sent to Honolulu as a secretary working for the US Navy, where she met Major Bryce Hedlund, then Transport Scheduling officer for Hickam Field. The two were wed at Biggs Field, El Paso, Texas in 1947. She accompanied him on assignments to Washington D. C., Japan, Los Angeles, Syracuse and Newburgh, NY, settling in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1965.
A lifelong enjoyment of golf, pool, Mexican food, Scrabble, and good books provided June with entertainment and focus. She is survived by her two sons, Joel and Shane, their wives, Janet and Lisa, Joel’s children Matthew and Teresa, and Shane’s children, Brian and Laura, and Brian’s daughter, Emerson. They will all miss her wit and sharp comments dearly.
Memorial gifts may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS, 66675-8517
The Medford Peden Funeral Home, Marietta, GA, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
