Louis Cossitte LaMotte, Jr.

Dr. Louis Cossitte LaMotte, Jr., age 94, passed away on July 15, 2022 in Dunwoody, GA.  He was born on January 21, 1928 to the late Sarah Hunter and Dr. Louis LaMotte, Sr.  He grew up in Maxton, NC and left to attend Duke University, where he majored in premedical science.  He graduated in 1948 and continued his studies in microbiology at the University of North Carolina, completing his masters degree before moving on to Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his Doctor of Science degree in Public Health.

While attending Duke University, and enjoying his Sigma Chi fraternity membership, he met Lila Jean Magruder, another Duke student, and they married at Tacoma Park Presbyterian Church on December 31, 1948, after both had completed their undergraduate studies.

During his long career as a virologist and immunologist, he served with the Biological Warfare Program of the Department of the Army, DOD at Fort Derrick, MD, the Virus Investigations Unit at CDC's site in Greeley, CO, and finally was transferred to CDC in Atlanta in 1966.  There he held several positions and retired in 1986.

Dr. LaMotte is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Lila jean LaMotte, and his brother, Edward LaMotte. He is survived by his children, Barbara (Robert) Jones, Robert (Mandy) LaMotte, Nancy (Albert) Pierce, Diane LaMotte, and Cindy (Robert) Love and his brother John H. (Olivia) LaMotte.  He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be announced at a later tiem and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, 1978 Mt Vernon Rd. Dunwoody, GA 30338.
