Wallace Pickel Obituary

Heaven welcomed Wallace Eugene Pickel of Marietta, Georgia on February 27, 2022 at the age of 86.

Wallace, known to most as Wally, was born on June 17, 1935 in Murray County to Joseph Franklin Pickel and Lillie Patterson Pickel.

He was one of seven children born in a log cabin in the Duggin area. He was the only child in his family to graduate from high school and college. He always remained very proud of his humble beginnings!

He graduated from Cassville High School and entered the US Navy in 1952, where he served until 1956. Upon discharge he completed a BBA from the University of Georgia and a JD from Woodrow Wilson College of Law. Wally spent most of his career in the insurance business.

Wally was happiest spending time with his family, playing music, tending to his vegetable garden, and chopping wood. He had a great love of music and was an accomplished guitarist and singer. He loved playing with his beloved band brothers at the senior center. Wally loved the beach and his North Georgia Mountains. He passed his love of travel on to his entire family.

His greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sue Pickel (formerly Day) and three daughters: Stephanie Harkins, Pam Chafin, and Kim Akin; as well as three son in laws who he adored: Paul, Nick, and James. Wally was beloved “Papa” to nine grandchildren: Seth Harkins, Jared Harkins, Jake Harkins, Kristen Wagner, Tyler Chafin, Laura Chafin, Jay Akin, Joseph Akin, and Rachel Akin, as well as eight great grandchildren: Karalin, Sawyer, Barrett, Laila, Jackson, Rylie, Caleb, and Wesley.

Wallace, a proud Navy veteran, will be laid to rest at the military cemetery in Canton, Georgia with full honors on March 18th.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the mission trip fund for his great grandchildren at Seek & Serve, 1225 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta GA 30068. The family appreciates your prayers during this difficult time.
