Jean G. (Gaston) Chapman

Jean Gaston (Mrs. James Emory) Chapman, age 94, died peacefully Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at Lenbrook retirement community in Atlanta, GA. Jean was a registered nurse and served in the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II, and was active in the reserves for several years. She attended Eastern Carolina University, Georgia State University and the University of Florida.

Jean devoted her adult life to being a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She thrived by maintaining a strong network of connections developed through involvement in her church, community, bridge and other social activities.

 Caring for others was her purpose. It was difficult for her to accept the loss of independence that comes with living a long life, but she did so with grace and courage. The family appreciates the special care and companionship Larysse Carey provided during recent years. She occupied a special place in Jean’s heart.

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at Lenbrook, 3747 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30319, on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 2:30pm. A reception will follow. Her remains will rest next to her husband in the mortuary at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, James Emory Chapman, PhD. She is survived by four children and their families, James Emory Chapman Jr., MD, and his wife Mary, Carl Gregory Chapman, Candace Chapman, and Joyce Auskelis and her husband John. Jean is also survived by her four grandchildren Riley, James, Christopher and Carter.
